The Manifold Wisdom of God Happening in Fairfield & Beyond
We can all sense the great division happening in America and the world. Nation against nation, brother against brother and professing Christian against professing Christian. Conservative churches are being inundated with false gospels from within and without. But one thing I have come to understand about God in his great sovereignty is that He doesn’t fret as humans tend to consistently do. So, therefore, God’s plans and purposes for all generations are always being accomplished in spite of the evil intentions of men.
It’s been nine years since God relocated me and my family here to Birmingham to plant Urban Hope Community Church. A vision for gospel hope in the hood and a vision for gospel unity among the people of God across ethnic, social and political alliances, starting in the city of Fairfield and expanding beyond.
In the coming weeks we will celebrate the grand opening of our brand new renovated worship building, once known as Bargain Town, a department store that brought economic life to Fairfield. Now, this same building which sat abandoned for years, will bring spiritual life to Fairfield, along with structural and visual signs of economic life and architectural beauty. This is the work of God himself in all of this. He is displaying His own glory in what some would call a forgotten city here in the south.
Well, God is just getting started in making His name known in Fairfield through His manifold wisdom. As soon as we were done raising funds for the worship building, God presented to us another opportunity to do more intentional ministry with young men of color, which would give us more laborers and foot soldiers on the ground for our current ministries and for possible future church plants in hard places like Fairfield. We are resuming the Urban Hope Leadership Initiative (UHLI), which is a discipleship program focusing on graduating seniors from surrounding colleges in the southeast. These young men will mostly come from our partnership with Campus Outreach, Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) and our own campus ministry (UHCM) at Miles College. God provided another building located two doors down from our church that will be the perfect place to house these young men in a renovated loft apartment. We have been praying for three years that God would provide housing for this program and He has done it in a most glorious way. The timing of this was not of our own doing, but of God himself, so that He alone would be made much of and not us.
This new building will not only be a place for UHLI, but it will bring two new businesses to Fairfield that will bring even more life. God is making His name known through his church. The architectural drawings, the construction teams and the donors are all being summoned by God himself for such a time as this.
I will share more about these new developments as we prepare for our grand openings happening during the month of October. The Manifold Wisdom of God is something that astonishes the angelic beings in the heavenly realms. Jew and Gentile together was a game changer for the first century Christians. Black and white together, doing urban church planting and discipleship among the poor in these divided times is a game changer happening right now in the city of Birmingham by way of Fairfield.
In the Fall of 2022, young men will start to do life in this space with two brand new businesses that will already be up and running. No government grants and no federal government oversight, but rather the government of Heaven superintending over this Manifold Project. God is leading His bride to truly be the people of God doing Gospel ministry of word and deed.
Please continue to give to the work as the Lord leads you. We are raising funds for the full purchase and renovation of this building. We will also continue to be in need of funds to support the work as we continue to do discipleship in these hard places, teaching them to observe all of the commands that Jesus has given to us in His word. We are trusting the Lord as He directs us through much counsel and godly oversight from wise elders in our vast network.
